Record-Setter Ranks for 'D' Dominance

Trevor Patterson stole the show in Galesburg-Augusta’s 53-35 win over Lawrence on Dec. 15.

The Rams’ senior scored 17 points, but more impressively tied a record with 14 steals originally set by Saginaw Valley Lutheran’s Brian Appold in 1981.

Patterson will continue his athletic career at the college level, but on the diamond for Grand Rapids Community College’s baseball program.

Boys Basketball

Hillsdale made team record lists for attempted and made free throws winter, connecting on 369 of 563 attempts over 23 contests. Senior Bryce Drews made the individual free throw list with 165 makes in 221 attempts.

A trio of decades old entries were added for Vermontville Maple Valley. Jeff Hamilton was added for his 120 steals in 1984-85, which at the time would’ve ranked second all-time and now sits 11th. Andy Joostberns had 31 rebounds in a 1979 game against Portland and 300 for the season. And Shaun Thompson was added for 34 straight free throws made over four games from Jan. 23-Feb. 9, 1990.

Marlo Brown finished his four-season varsity career at Southfield Christian in 2016 with 1,074 rebounds to rank sixth all-time on that career list. His highest single-season total was 301 as a freshman. The 6-foot-5 forward currently plays at Northern Illinois University.

Tanner Curry finished his four-season varsity career at Martin in 2017 also among leading rebounders in Michigan history. He grabbed 1,070 – good for seventh all-time – and including a high of 311 over 23 games as a senior. He’s playing football at Saginaw Valley State University.

Big Rapids Crossroads Academy and Walkerville combined for 23 3-pointers in their game Dec. 7, tying for ninth most by two teams combined in the same game. Crossroads had 13, led by Britton Angell who scored 53 points with eight 3-pointers. But Walkerville won the game 90-84.

Portland St. Patrick and Saranac combined for 22 3-pointers on Jan. 2 to also make that two-teams combined list, and the Shamrocks made the single-team single-game list with 17 of those long-distance shots. Brandon Scheurer led the effort with seven 3-pointers on the way to 33 points.

Bear Lake’s 18-4 run this winter included an 82-17 win over Marion on Dec. 19 during which the Lakers scored 44 points during the first quarter to make the record book. Kaiden Hejl led the early run with 14 of his game-high 27 points during the first eight minutes.

Eventual Class B semifinalist New Haven scored 40 points during the first quarter of an 89-54 win against St. Clair Shores Lake Shore on Feb. 24. Romeo Weems just missed making the individual points in a quarter list, putting up 18 of that 40.

More than 45 seasons after grabbing 324 rebounds for Redford Union, Mark Kenney’s accomplishment was added to the MHSAA records. He grabbed that single-season boards total in 1971-72, as a senior, over 21 games as his team finished 17-4.

Records Report: Pioneer 1st in Lacrosse

While we try to keep up with record book submissions all year long, the month of December is a key time for catch-up as fall sports are recently done and spring sports are just getting going before schools take a few weeks off.

Here are some of our most recent submissions, with plenty more updates to come over the next few weeks. Click on each sport to go to that MHSAA record book. 

Boys Lacrosse

  • The boys lacrosse record book is in its infancy. But Ann Arbor Pioneer is the early leader for most goals scored and fewest given up during one season. The Pioneers outscored opponents 213-67 on the way to finishing Division 1 runner-up this spring. They twice scored 20 or more goals, and also shut out two opponents.
  • Two Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central teammates are listed for single-game accomplishments from last season: Jeffrey Osment scored eight goals during an 18-6 win over Romulus on May 5, and Brandon Tata made 20 saves during a 14-4 win over Ypsilanti Lincoln on May 14.

Football

  • J.J. McGrath has built a career comparable to those of the best kickers in MHSAA history. He’s now listed in the record book for three field goals of longer than 50 yards – a 52 yarder last season as a junior, a 57-yarder this season on opening night and a 54-yarder a week later in Macomb Lutheran North’s second game.
  • Greenville kicker Caleb Wolfe registered on the career list with 95 extra points over his four-year varsity career. He made 31 straight at one point, and with a season-high of 47 as a sophomore.
  • Warren Michigan Collegiate’s 2011 team made the team record listings in two categories, including setting the record with 33 interceptions over 12 games. Nine players contributed to that total. The Cougars also scored 532 points while finishing 11-1. 

Softball

  • Beth Michalski drove in seven runs in Warren Fitzgerald’s 29-5 win over Southfield Lathrup on March 28 of this spring. She was 3 for 4 with all three hits being doubles, and scored four runs herself.
  • Lowell’s Morgan Groom struck out the first 10 batters she faced on the way to 17 total in a six-inning game against Hudsonville Unity Christian on April 12, 2011. She also struck out 20 twice in seven-inning games this spring.

Soccer

  • While younger brother Aaron Chatfield broke the MHSAA career goals record this season, older brother Paul also finished his Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian career with some impressive numbers – 109 goals, 82 assists and 191 points – which all rank in the MHSAA record book. He graduated this spring.

Wrestling

  • Dearborn Heights Annapolis grad Justis Cummins has been added to the 200-win club with a record of 207-30 during his career from 2006-10.

Baseball

  • On May 6, 1999, Owosso senior Andrew Brooks hit two home runs against Durand – both in the seventh inning. He joins a list of 24 who have hit two round-trippers in an inning.
