Thursday saw the start of varsity football season, and nearly half of Michigan’s teams kicked off their fall.
Football’s first week in review will be posted Monday afternoon; in the meantime, there is more good news to report from today’s statewide headlines.
Cross Country
The Croswell-Lexington girls and Yale boys won the Mike Jackson Invitational, with Port Huron’s Rachel Bonner – fourth at the Lower Peninsula Division 1 Final last season – taking the girls individual title by 59 seconds – Port Huron Times-Herald
Girls Golf
Spring Lake set a school record shooting 321 to win the Big Rapids Invitational, also placing the top two individuals – Grand Haven Tribune

Longtime cross country and track and field official Doug Steward was quoted as saying he was close to retiring – in 2009. But this fall, after 51 years, he indeed will start his final races – Mount Pleasant Morning Sun
The Lac Vieux Desert Tribe presented Watersmeet schools with $174,000 earlier this year that in part went to a new gym floor complete with the school's nationally-recognized Nimrod logo – Ironwood Daily Globe

1. BOYS TENNIS No. 3 Maple City Glen Lake claimed three singles flights to clinch its first Regional team title since 2002, finishing just ahead of No. 3 Traverse City St. Francis in Lower Peninsula Division 4 – Traverse City Record-Eagle
2. BOYS TENNIS Holland West Ottawa and Rockford shared the championship at their LPD1 Regional – Holland Sentinel
3. GIRLS GOLF Petoskey edged Cadillac by a stroke to win their LPD2 Regional – Traverse City Record-Eagle
4. BOYS TENNIS Host and top-ranked Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood was first, Goodrich was second, and Bay City John Glenn earned its first Finals berth coming in third at their LPD3 Regional – Bay City Times
5. BOYS SOCCER Adrian Lenawee Christian edged Manchester 2-1 in a Division 4 District opener – Adrian Daily Telegram
6. BOYS SOCCER No. 12 Berkley held off Birmingham Groves 3-2 in Division 1 – Oakland Press
7. BOYS SOCCER No. 6 Grand Blanc advanced in Division 1 with a 2-0 shutout of Flushing – WJRT
8. BOYS SOCCER Battle Creek Harper Creek scored the lone goal in its Division 2 game against Marshall – Battle Creek Enquirer
9. BOYS SOCCER Midland Dow downed Midland High 4-0 in Division 1 – Midland Daily News
10. BOYS SOCCER Dearborn edged Dearborn Heights Crestwood 2-1 in Division 1 – Dearborn Press & Guide
