A few track & field school records were broken across the middle of the Lower Peninsula over the last few days, but pay special attention to a pair of stories of courage in our “Good Reads” section at the bottom of this report.

From Monday, Portage Northern downed reigning Division 1 champion and top-ranked Warren DeLaSalle 12-2 – Kalamazoo Gazette

Midland Bullock Creek sophomore sprinter Samantha Chew broke a school record and tied another in her team’s double-dual sweep of Saginaw Swan Valley and Chesaning – Midland Daily News
From Tuesday, Shepherd’s girls swept Alma and Standish-Sterling as Amber Gall broke a school record held since 1980 – Mount Pleasant Morning Sun

Noah Kole finished third in Gaylord St. Mary’s golf match Tuesday – two months after not being able to walk while fighting for his life – Gaylord Herald-Times

3. GIRLS GOLF Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central shot a 354 to edge Spring Lake by a stroke and win its Ranger Invitational – Grand Haven Tribune
4. GIRLS GOLF Grace Slocum won her third tournament already this season, in also leading Traverse City St. Francis to its home invitational team title – Traverse City Record-Eagle
5. BOYS SOCCER Troy edged rival Troy Athens 2-1 in an Oakland Activities Association Red opener – Oakland Press
6. BOYS SOCCER Bad Axe improved to 2-0 with a 3-0 win over Unionville-Sebewaing – Huron Daily Tribune
7. BOYS SOCCER McBain Northern Michigan Christian earned its first win this season, 7-1 over Oscoda – Cadillac News
8. BOYS TENNIS Holland West Ottawa won all of the top eight flights except No. 2 singles in an 8-1 win over Holland High – Holland Sentinel
9. VOLLEYBALL Grass Lake swept North Adams-Jerome to begin its season – Jackson Citizen Patriot
