Boys basketball season tipped off Monday and gained most of the headlines. Here’s a look at some of the games that got the most attention, plus a few more notable events from other sports.
Boys Basketball
Steven Lloyd tied a school record set in 1965 with 38 points in Clinton Township Chippewa Valley’s 76-66 opening-night win over Royal Oak – Macomb Daily
Reigning Class A champion Detroit Western International downed Chicago city league champion Bogan 65-60 – Detroit News
Reigning Class C champion Flint Beecher hung its latest championship banner and then downed rival Flint Southwestern 77-49 – Flint Journal
Detroit U-D Jesuit edged Chicago Morgan Park 64-61 behind 26 points from senior guard Cassius Winston – Mlive-Detroit
Girls Basketball
Bay City John Glenn continued its impressive start with a 41-23 victory over previously-undefeated Frankenmuth – Saginaw News
Competitive Cheer
From Saturday, St. Joseph – eighth in Division 2 last season – won the first of three “Cheer by the Pier” events scheduled for this season, scoring 629.92 points to edge Otsego by 1.94 – St. Joseph Herald-Palladium

1. VOLLEYBALL Milan claimed its first Regional title in this sport, sweeping Wixom St. Catherine in Division 2 – Monroe News
2. VOLLEYBALL No. 10 Clarkston Everest Collegiate is another first-time Regional champion thanks to its sweep of Auburn Hills Oakland Christian in Division 4 – Oakland Press
3. VOLLEYBALL St. Joseph Our Lady of the Lake won its first Regional title as well, in Division 4 over Martin – St. Joseph Herald-Palladium
4. VOLLEYBALL Newberry swept honorable mention Onaway in Division 4 to clinch its first Regional championship since 1991 – MI Sports Now
5. VOLLEYBALL Honorable mention Ludington came back after losing the first set to win the next three over Kingsford in Division 2 and claim its first Regional title since 1997 – Ludington Daily News
6. VOLLEYBALL Honorable mention Grand Haven advanced in Division 1 with a Regional Final win over No. 7 Rockford – Grand Haven Tribune
7. VOLLEYBALL Edwardsburg clinched a Division 2 Regional title with a four-set win over honorable mention Otsego – Niles Daily Star
8. VOLLEYBALL No. 4 Kalamazoo Christian repeated as a Regional champion with a sweep of honorable mention Bronson in Division 3 – WWMT
9. VOLLEYBALL Top-ranked Adrian Lenawee Christian is moving on to the final week after a sweep of No. 7 Battle Creek St. Philip in Division 4 – Adrian Daily Telegram
10. VOLLEYBALL No. 10 Cass City repeated as a Regional champion with a Division 3 sweep over honorable mention Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest – Huron Daily Tribune
