Volleyball: In Ubly, Kubacki means Assist

February 29, 2012

In a report by the Huron Daily Tribune, Ubly coach Andy Guza called the last victory of his team's three-set win over Sandusky on Oct. 4, "the craziest game I've ever seen."

It also capped a record-setting match for his junior setter.

Ubly won 25-19, 26-28, 25-27, 25-21 and 23-21. Junior Ashley Kubacki totaled 65 assists -- 18 more than Ubly's previous school record and also two more than the previous best in the MHSAA record book for the five-game rally scoring era.

The main recipient of those passes was senior Nicole Kubacki, who finished with 32 kills -- which tied for 16th most in the MHSAA record book for one match.

(NOTE: The MHSAA switched to five-game rally scoring in 2004-05, and at that time started new record book listings for all categories to reflect the change in format.)

Be the Referee: Volleyball Back-Row Block

By Sam Davis

October 28, 2021

Be The Referee is a series of short messages designed to help educate people on the rules of different sports, to help them better understand the art of officiating, and to recruit officials.

Below is this week's segment – Volleyball Back-Row Block Listen

We’re on the volleyball court today where Team A’s back-row setter is in the front zone near the net and jumps to try to make the team’s second contact. The ball enters the plane of the net where Team A’s back-row setter and Team B’s front row player simultaneously touch the ball above the top of the net. What’s the call?

Illegal block on Team A’s back-row setter.

A back-row player attempting to play a ball in the space directly above the net is considered an illegal blocker if the ball is attacked or blocked by an opponent into the back-row player while reaching above the height of the net.

Team B receives a point and would be next to serve.
