Moment: Dakota Capitalizes in Return

Macomb Dakota’s first trip to an MHSAA Softball Final in 2016 ended with a shutout loss to a powerhouse Farmington Hills Mercy team that has gained much from a Semifinals trip the season before.
A year later in 2017, a more experienced Cougars team also put itself in position to return to the season’s final day – and capitalize on any opportunity that might await.
That opportunity came in the bottom of the eighth inning, as senior Kattie Popko scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch to carry Dakota past Grandville 4-3 and clinch the Cougars’ first Finals championship on the softball diamond.
Popko finished 2-for-4 and had scored two more runs before reaching base in the eighth inning on an error. She moved to third base on a pair of singles, and raced home for the winning run when a two-out, two-strike pitch sailed high and to the net behind the plate.
“We always depend on each other and we always, always, always never give up; that’s something that helped us win today,’’ said Popko that afternoon.
“Last year we knew it was going to be tough going into the state championship game. Farmington Hills Mercy blew their way through the tournament. This year we knew we had to forget about last year. We knew it was going to be even harder this year to make it here. We had to have confidence in ourselves and trust the training we’ve been through.’’
Popko has continued her career at Madonna.

D4 Softball Final: Dansville Dream Come True

BATTLE CREEK – Dansville’s three MHSAA Semifinal games over the last four seasons included a nine-run loss to Petersburg-Summerfield in 2010, the first of two straight seasons the Bulldogs went on to win the Division 4 title.
It was fair to expect a similar result in Saturday’s championship game, with Petersburg-Summerfield again the top-ranked team heading into this tournament.
But the Aggies, a day after their first Semifinal win ever, capped this spring with the best ending of all.
Thanks to a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, Dansville claimed its first championship with a 3-2 win in the final game for seniors Rebekah Guy, Addie Price and Alison Schlicker, who as freshmen all helped the 2009 team get to Battle Creek for the first time.
The Aggies entered this year’s tournament ranked No. 9.
Sophomore centerfielder Hailey Mays started off the sixth inning rally with a single, and she eventually scored on a single by junior leftfielder Paige Galbreath. Sophomore third baseman Taylor Hoefling doubled Galbreath home.
Junior first baseman Evy Lobdel had two hits for the Aggies (31-5) and drove in the first run. Sophomore pitcher Meagan Kelly struck out only two Bulldogs, but didn’t walk any and gave up just one earned run.
Senior catcher Taylor Goodin led Petersburg-Summerfield (34-4) with two hits and an RBI. Senior pitcher Emily Puterbaugh ended a stellar career by striking out six over six innings.
