Be The Referee is a series of short messages designed to help educate people on the rules of different sports, to help them better understand the art of officiating, and to recruit officials.

Below is this week's segment – Girls Lacrosse Self-Start - Listen

You make the call: In girls lacrosse … when can a player self-start?

New this year, when there is a foul by an attack player within the critical scoring area when the game clock is running, the defensive player awarded the free position is allowed self-start.

If the game clock is stopped, it will be a whistle-start.

When else can a player self-start?

a) On an offside foul
b) On a defensive foul in the critical scoring area
c) On a defensive foul in the midfield
d) After a misconduct card has been issued

The correct answer is on a defensive foul in the midfield. For any fouls in the midfield when the clock is running, the player who was fouled may self-start from a settled stance within four meters of the spot of the foul.

Performance of the Week: Detroit Country Day's Hadley Keating

June 16, 2023

Hadley KeatingHadley Keating ♦ Detroit Country Day
Junior ♦ Lacrosse

Keating – Country Day’s leading scorer this season with 96 goals – connected on perhaps the most memorable of her high school career during the final minute of her team’s season. She found the net with nine seconds to play in Saturday’s Division 2 Final to carry the Yellowjackets past East Grand Rapids 13-12 – clinching Country Day’s first MHSAA championship in girls lacrosse.

Those 96 goals tied for 18th-most for a single season in MHSAA history, and she’s climbing the career list as well with a chance to finish among the top 10 all-time; she also led Country Day in scoring in 2022 when the team finished Division 2 runner-up. She’s the latest star from an accomplished sports family – her father Blase played tennis collegiately and professionally, her oldest sister Annie was a two-time Finals doubles champion for Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart, and middle sister Kelleigh also was a high school tennis champion and played lacrosse at Stanford. Hadley has committed to sign with Notre Dame’s women’s lacrosse program and is considering majoring in economics with a minor in data science or computer science as she considers a career in investment banking.
