Michigan's Best Reach Higher at Milford

HIGHLAND TOWNSHIP – Nearly 200 of the top high school basketball players in Michigan took part in the Reaching Higher experience during the last two weeks at Milford High School.
A total of 96 boys attended Reaching Higher on July 13, and 90 girls attended the July 25 session. The program, in its eighth year, again included instruction on the court and off.
Skill training and scrimmages followed presentations by speakers Carlton Valentine and Justin Jennings (former Michigan State and Purdue standouts, respectively) at the boys program and Nicole Elmblad (University of Michigan record holder) and Dave Ginsburg (longtime high school and college coach) at the girls session. An educational effort by the Michigan High School Athletic Association and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, the Reaching Higher experience also included classroom sessions for parents and instruction from NCAA compliance officers.
Players invited to Reaching Higher were selected by a committee of BCAM members and received the opportunity to show their skills in front of college coaches representing all three NCAA levels and the NAIA. Coaches representing 27 colleges attended the boys session, and 19 colleges attended the girls showcase.

Title IX at 50: Evelyn's Game Had Plenty of Magic

The last name “Johnson” was synonymous with Lansing basketball stardom during the late 1970s.
But Earvin wasn’t the only player making magic on area basketball courts.
Two grades younger at Lansing Everett, sister Evelyn Johnson was putting together one of the state’s most memorable high school hoops careers as well – even besting older brother in final career scoring average.
A 5-foot-11 center, Evelyn Johnson scored 1,762 points over a three-year, 59-game varsity career with the Vikings, her 29.9 points per game career average just a few points higher than Magic’s 25.8; Evelyn’s remained the girls basketball state record until 2001. During her senior season of (Fall) 1978, Johnson averaged 36 points per game, with her 804 total over 23 games remaining the sixth-most points in one season in MHSAA history.
According to a Lansing State Journal report on Jan. 1, 1979, Johnson scored 30 or more points in 27 games and 40 or more points seven times during her career. Everett finished 52-7 over those three seasons, including 21-2 her final campaign in making the Class A Semifinals.
Johnson went on to play at South Carolina. Her 1,620 points remain 10th all-time for the Gamecocks.
