Be the Referee: Competitive Cheer Safety

Be The Referee is a series of short messages designed to help educate people on the rules of different sports, to help them better understand the art of officiating, and to recruit officials.
Below is this week's segment – Competitive Cheer Safety - Listen
Cheerleaders – usually at the college level – get in the sports headlines whenever an accident occurs causing a serious injury.
In Michigan, the sport of competitive cheer doesn’t make the news in that regard. Why? Because this sport, created by Michigan schools, has built in safety guidelines for competition, including the proper matting, rules which prohibit dangerous stunts and safety judges observing the routines.
Middle school competitive cheer is more restrictive, allowing the focus to be on the fundamentals that will provide a safe foundation when these athletes transition into high school and beyond.
This format is exclusive to Michigan and just another way that high school sports take the extra step to make the games our athletes play as safe as they can possibly be.

Performance of the Week: Rochester Hills Stoney Creek's Abbey DeGraw

Senior ♦ Competitive Cheer
DeGraw – a Division 1 all-state first-team selection last season – was among standouts as Stoney Creek won the Division 1 competition at Saturday’s Wyandotte Roosevelt Invitational. The Cougars scored 790.16 points to edge rival Rochester Adams by two-hundredths of a point. Adams was second and Stoney Creek third – behind champion Rochester High – at last season’s Division 1 Final.
A dancer growing up, DeGraw began cheer in sixth grade and also made the all-state second team as a junior when Stoney Creek finished Division 1 runner-up. Stoney Creek will compete in the same District as Adams and Rochester on Feb. 16 as the Cougars begin their pursuit of a first Finals championship since 2019. DeGraw will next attend University of Michigan, and study biochemistry.
