Boys Soccer Finals TV Schedule Announced

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Nov. 9 -- The air times for the tape-delayed telecast of the championship games of the 1998 Michigan High School Athletic Association Boys Soccer Finals have been set.

The championship games, which were played on November 7, will air on many cable systems around the state on November 22. The games will air consecutively, beginning at 10 a.m., and concluding at 6 p.m. The schedule is as follows:

10 a.m. -- Division 4 Championship Game -- This game was won by Elk Rapids by a score of 2-0 over Muskegon Western Michigan Christian. It was the second consecutive Division 4 championship for the Elks. John Matlak of WOOD Radio in Grand Rapids and Sheldon Larky call the game.

Noon -- Division 3 Championship Game -- Paw Paw won this game over Detroit Country Day by a 1-0 count. Mark Wilson of WDFN Radio in Detroit and Phil Bryan will announce this game.

2 p.m. -- Division 2 Championship Game -- Grand Rapids Christian emerged as the champion in this division, scoring three times in the second half of a 4-0 decision over Detroit U-D Jesuit. John Matlak and Sheldon Larky.

4 p.m. -- Division 1 Championship Game -- It was the third meeting of the season for Kensington Valley Conference rivals Novi and Brighton, with Novi taking a 4-0 victory to sweep the trio of games. Mark Wilson and Phil Bryan.

The November 22 date is when the games will be uplinked through the facilities at Michigan Government Television (MGTV). Many cable systems will air the games on the same channel on which MGTV is carried.

Some systems will air the games at other times. The Division 3 match between Paw Paw and Detroit Country Day will be first shown on Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 14 & 15) at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Aldelphia Cablevision in Southwestern Michigan. The games will also air on Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.; Nov. 17 at 10 a.m.; Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.; Nov. 19 at 10 a.m.; and Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. Aldelphia will air the games on Channel 12, and is available in Paw Paw, Augusta, Comstock, Decatur, Galesburg, Hickory Creek, Lawton, Oshtemo, Richland and Texas Township.

The Division 4 title game between Elk Rapids and Muskegon Western Michigan Christian will be shown on December 2 at 6 p.m. on Cable Michigan in Northwest Michigan. Cable Michigan will show the game on Channel 2, serving the following communities: Elk Rapids, Acme, Benzonia, Beulah, Bingham, Blair, Cedar, East Bay, Elmwood, Empire, Fife Lake, Frankfort, Garfield, Glen Arbor, Glen Lake, Green Lake, Honor, Interlochen, Kasson, Kingsley, Lake Ann, Lake Leelanau, Leland, Long Lake, Maple City, Northport, Omena, Paradise, Peninsula, Peshawbestown, Suttons Bay and Traverse City.

MediaOne serving Southfield, West Bloomfield, Oak Park, Madison Heights, Hazel Park and Lathrup Village will air the games on Channel 11 on the following schedule: Division 1, Friday (Nov. 13) at 3:30 p.m.; Division 2, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m.; Division 3, Nov. 24 at 3:30 p.m.; and Division 4, Nov. 27 at 3:30 p.m.

In all, the games will be available to over 1.1 million cable viewers.

The Boys Soccer Finals is part of a five-sport package on the MHSAA Championship Television Network. Other MHSAA championships to air on the network on a tape-delayed basis in 1998-99 are: Girls Competitive Cheer, Ice Hockey, Lower Peninsula Girls Volleyball and Girls Soccer. In addition, three MHSAA championships will be shown live on FOX Sports Detroit -- Football (Nov. 27-28), Girls Basketball (Dec. 5) and Boys Basketball (March 27, 1999).

Sponsors of the MHSAA Championship Network and the MHSAA on FOX Sports Detroit are Farm Bureau Insurance and the United Dairy Industry of Michigan.
