FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Sept. 26, 2008 SCREAM For Sportsmanship: Student Summit Series Begins Monday EAST LANSING, Mich. – Sept. 26 – As one of the defining issues in school sports, sportsmanship receives constant attention, and the Michigan High School Athletic Association continues its emphasis with a series of student Sportsmanship Summits in the next six weeks. Over 1,000 student-athletes from over 100 schools are expected to take part in the four workshops, where they will learn how to define the line that separates good from bad sportsmanship – including cheers that are appropriate for educational athletic events. The theme for this year’s series is Sportsmanship Summit: SCREAM 2008 where… Sportsmanship Creates Respect and Excellence Among Many. The summits will feature hands-on breakout sessions – including one session developed and instructed by members of the MHSAA Student Advisory Council. At the end of the day, the delegation from each participating school will meet to develop a youth sportsmanship campaign to implement upon returning their community. MEEMIC Insurance Company, the MHSAA’s corporate partner in sportsmanship education and recognition efforts, is an underwriting supporter of the Sportsmanship Summit series, which will take place at:
Registration at each site is limited to the first 300 students and administrators. Schools are welcome to bring as many as 10 total representatives, including two administrators. For additional registration information, contact Andy Frushour at the MHSAA office – [email protected] or 517/332-5046. Registration information is also available on the MHSAA Website. The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by over 1,600 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition. No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools. Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract approximately 1.6 million spectators each year. -0- Farm Bureau Insurance and MEEMIC Insurance |
