Michigan Well Represented In 2008 National High School Sports Record Book

EAST LANSING, Mich. –  May 29 – A total of 99 team and individual performances from Michigan high schools either own outright or share record-setting marks in the 2008 edition of the National High School Sports Record Book, published by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

A total of 78 performances by student-athletes, 20 by teams, and one coach, sit atop the lists in 17 different sports.  In addition, 304 individual and 141 team performances are on top 10 lists, and 97 coaching marks are also included.

Wrestling leads the record parade with 25 records – 13 four-time state association individual champions, seven marks for team points in a dual meet, three fastest pins, and two other marks make up the total.  Fifteen baseball entries, and 10 marks each in football and softball are the top sports in which Michigan is represented.

Alisha Glass, a 2006 graduate of Leland High School, owns the most top spots of any individual from Michigan in the record book with four.  Glass has career marks in girls volleyball for blocks, kills and service aces; and a season record in service aces.

Taylor Light & Life Christian is the most frequently listed Michigan school among the record holders, with six entries.  Homer High School has 5 record-setting marks, Ann Arborn Pioneer and Leland each have four, and Flint Powers Catholic and Williamston each appear three times.  Twelve additional schools each have two records. A total of 70 Michigan schools are represented in the book.

The mark from Michigan with the most longevity is the 24 extra points kicked (out of 30 attempts) by Nelson Stuit of  Muskegon High School in a 1912 football game with Hastings.  Two records in the book will stand forever -- a 2:07.7 time in the 880-yard run in girls track and field by Delisa Walton of Detroit Mackenzie in 1978; and a :13.6 mark in the 110-yard low hurdles by Kim Turner of Detroit Mumford in 1979 are imperial records which have been retired.

The 2008 edition of the National High School Sports Record Book is available for purchase from the National Federation of State High School Associations at a cost of $12.95 each, plus postage and handling.  For more information, contact the NFHS at P.O. Box 690, Indianapolis, IN 46206. Telephone:  800-776-3462.

Michigan high school records can be viewed by clicking on Record Book from the home page of the MHSAA Website. The Michigan records list is updated periodically during the school year.  To be considered for the MHSAA Record Book, potential records must be submitted in writing to the MHSAA Office, and appropriate documentation must be included.  E-mail submissions will not be considered.

The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by over 1,600 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition.  No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools.  Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.

NOTE – A complete list of Michigan record holders in the National High School Sports Record Book follows this release, and can be viewed from the Records Home Page of the MHSAA Website.
