Four Reelected to Representative Council

EAST LANSING, Mich.  – Oct. 26 – Four members of the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Representative Council have been reelected to their positions on the Association’s legislative body, and two new members have been elected to vacated spots on the board.

Dan Flynn, a faculty member and coach at Escanaba High School, will continue to serve as the Class A and B school representative in the Upper Peninsula.  Lafayette Evans, the citywide athletic administrator for Detroit Public Schools, was reelected to the position serving that school district.  Ken Dietz, the athletic director at Hartford High School, returns on behalf of Class C and D schools in Southwestern Michigan; and Karen Leinaar, the athletic director at Benzie Central High School, was again selected to a statewide at-large position on the Council.

Newly elected members of the Representative Council are:  Kristen Isom, athletic director at Adrian Madison High School, to represent Class C and D schools in Southeastern Michigan; and Rudy Godefroidt, superintendent at Hemlock High School, to a Junior High/Middle School position.

All of the positions were elected for two-year terms which begin in December.  The Representative Council is the 19-member legislative body of the MHSAA.  All but five members are elected by member schools.  Four members are appointed by the Council to facilitate representation of females and minorities; and the 19th position is occupied by the Superintendent of Public Instruction or designee.

The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by over 1,600 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition.  No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools.  Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.
