MHSAA News & Notes

RULES MEETINGS BEGIN JULY 24 –The first sign of the onset of a new school year is when rules meetings for Fall sports begin.  The first rules meetings begin on Monday – July 24 – in basketball and football at Novi High  School; and in soccer at Wayne Memorial High School.  Most basketball-football doubleheaders will start with basketball at 5 p.m., followed at 6:30 p.m. by football.  If you could help us publicize the schedule of rules meetings, it would be appreciated.  Media are always welcome to attend MHSAA Rules Meetings to become knowledgeable about rules changes and points of emphasis for the coming year.  These meetings are also a great way to visit with coaches and officials that will be in attendance at these meetings.  No pre-registration is required.  A complete rules meeting schedule is available on the MHSAA Web site at the following link:  http://www.mhsaa.com/resources/0405rules.html.

We encourage you to visit that page often, especially if you are going to publicize an upcoming rules meeting in your area, to be sure that you’re accessing the most current information available.

FOOTBALL SCHEDULES – One of the most popular features during the summer of the MHSAA Web site is the availability of varsity football schedules for the coming season.  The schedules are available now in a dynamic format, sortable by school and by week.  You can obtain a composite schedule from a link at the top of the page for each week’s schedule.  For the first time this season, schools will be required to submit online the results of their games, including the final score.  Home teams will be required to submit results immediately following games, and the visiting team will be required to submit the following morning as a cross check for playoff average tabulation purposes.  Scores will be available on the MHSAA Web site in real time, with a link from the Football page directing visitors to the scores.  Weekly scores will also be archived.  During the season, you will be able to review each team’s won-loss record and playoff points.  Football is the only sport the MHSAA gathers schedules and results in because of the need to use that information for the administration of its post-season playoffs – since that information is in-house, we are happy to share it with you.  You can access schedules from the Football Page of the MHSAA Web site -- http://www.mhsaa.com/sports/fb/index.htm.

HOT-WEATHER TRAINING TIPS – This week’s weather should remind all of us of what high school athletes may encounter when they formally begin practice in August.  Each May, the MHSAA sends out information to its member schools about hot weather training information which can be applied to all sports.  In football, data from the National Federation of State High School Associations shows three cases of heat stroke death at the high school level.  There is no excuse for any number of heat stroke deaths since they are all preventable with the proper precautions.
From 1995 through the 2005 football season there have been 19 high school heat stroke deaths nationally.    Every effort should be made to continuously educate coaches concerning the proper procedures and precautions when practicing or playing in the heat.  We know hot weather training tips are something which appear in some media as a news or lifestyle report, so feel free to pass this information on to the appropriate person on your staff.  Here’s a link on the MHSAA Web site where you can reference the training information: http://www.mhsaa.com/resources/conditioning.pdf.
