2005-06 Parade of Champions

EAST LANSING, Mich. – June 26 – For the second straight year, a total of 96 different schools were crowned champions, including seven for the first time in any sport, in Michigan High School Athletic Association tournaments during the 2005-06 school year.

The past year saw a total of 121 team champions in classes or divisions, and there were seven schools winning their first MHSAA titles in any sport:  White Lake Lakeland in girls bowling; Pinckney in boys cross country; Traverse City West in girls skiing; Pontiac Notre Dame Prep in girls skiing; Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian in boys tennis; Kent City in girls track and field; and Ubly in girls track and field.  In addition, there were 28 other teams which won tournament titles in a given sport for the first time.

Thirteen of the 96 schools winning in 2005-06 took more than one crown, with four schools – Birmingham Brother Rice, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood, Detroit Renaissance and Warren DeLaSalle – claiming two or more championships each in unified tournaments.  Brother Rice won in football and boys lacrosse; Cranbrook-Kingswood won in ice hockey and boys lacrosse; Renaissance won in boys and girls basketball, becoming the fourth school ever to pull off the boys-girls double in basketball in a school year; and DeLaSalle won in boys bowling and boys soccer.  Marquette again won six total titles; while Ann Arbor Pioneer and Ishpeming Westwood each won four championships, and Cranbrook-Kingswood won three titles.  Eighteen of the MHSAA's 28 championship tournaments are unified, involving teams from the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, while separate competition to determine titlists in both Peninsulas is conducted in the other 10 sports.

Four schools ran nine consecutive championship streaks to four or more in a given sport, including:
Ann Arbor Pioneer in girls swimming and diving (6) and boys tennis (6); Davison in wrestling (5); Dexter in boys cross country (4); and Marquette in boys cross country (6), girls cross country (6), boys tennis (6), girls swimming and diving (4), girls tennis (4).
