MHSAA Sponsors National Coaching Educators’ Conference This Weekend

EAST LANSING, Mich. – June 12 – Long a leader on the high school level in advancing the need for continuing education of coaches at the interscholastic level, the Michigan High School Athletic Association is serving as a sponsor of the 2006 National Coaching Educators’ Conference.  This year’s conference will take place Thursday through Saturday (June 15-17) at the James B. Henry Center for Executive Development on the campus of Michigan State University.

The MHSAA is one of three sponsors of the event, the others being the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the United States Olympic Committee.  This is the sixth annual conference, at which approximately 135 coaching educators from across the country will meet to discuss current issues, trends, and innovative techniques for training sport coaches.  The event is being hosted by the Youth Sports Institute at Michigan State University.

The conference will feature a number of local speakers.  MHSAA Executive Director John E. “Jack” Roberts, and Assistant Director Kathy Vruggink-Westdorp will be speaking on the program; along with Youth Sports Institute staff; athletic administrators from MHSAA member schools; coaches and athletic administrators from Michigan State University; and a student panel from Lansing Catholic Central High School.

The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by over 1,700 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition.  No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools.  Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.
