Winter Tournament Good Sports Are Winners! Recipients Announced;
MEEMIC Insurance Presents Awards To Honored Schools At All Levels

EAST LANSING, Mich. – April 27 -- The recipients of the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Good Sports Are Winners! Awards for the recently-completed 2004 Winter sports season have been named, with each school to receive recognition from MEEMIC Insurance, the Association's corporate partner in sportsmanship efforts.

New Lothrop in team dual wrestling, Ovid-Elsie in girls competitive cheer, Marquette in ice hockey, Kingsley in girls volleyball, and Charlevoix and Wyoming Tri-unity Christian in boys basketball, were selected by the tournament management at their respective finals for displaying the most exemplary sportsmanship by their coaches, student-athletes and spectators. Each school receiving a Finals award will be presented a commemorative banner and crystal trophy at a venue of the school's choosing at a future date.

New Lothrop was the Division 3 champion in team dual wrestling, Ovid-Elsie was the Class B titlist in girls competitive cheer, Marquette was the Division 1 champion in ice hockey, Kingsley was the Class C runner-up in girls volleyball, and Charlevoix and Wyoming Tri-unity Christian were finalists in Classes C and D, respectively, in boys basketball.

In addition to receiving the finals award, Kingsley also won a Regional award in girls volleyball and a District honor in team dual wrestling; Charlevoix won Regional recognition in girls volleyball; and New Lothrop was chosen for a Quarterfinal certificate in girls volleyball.

For New Lothrop and Wyoming Tri-unity Christian, this is the second time each school has received the Good Sports Are Winners! Award at the Finals level of MHSAA tournament play in their respective sports. New Lothrop won the 1994 award at team dual wrestling; and Tri-unity Christian was the recipient of the boys basketball award in 1996.

At the District, Regional and Quarterfinal levels of MHSAA tournaments, all schools which meet a set of sportsmanlike standards will be recognized. Those schools will be presented framed certificates from MEEMIC Insurance.

In all, 218 teams in team dual wrestling, girls competitive cheer, ice hockey, girls volleyball and boys basketball are being recognized for their outstanding sportsmanship at Winter tournaments. Those teams will also be recognized through the publication of their names in the MHSAA Bulletin, the MHSAA Finals program series, and on the MHSAA Web site. A total of 37 schools won multiple awards during the Winter sports season, with Goodrich being honored four times to lead that group. During the course of the school year, over 500 teams will be recognized in 11 activities for their sportsmanship efforts during MHSAA tournaments.

The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by over 1,200 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition. No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools. Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.

MEEMIC Insurance Company, with headquarters in Auburn Hills, writes full coverage private passenger automobile protection and homeowners insurance for educational employees and their immediate families in the state of Michigan .
