2003-04 Parade of Champions

EAST LANSING, Mich. – July 1 A total of 82 different schools were crowned champions, including five for the first time, in Michigan High School Athletic Association tournaments during the 2003-04 school year.

The past year saw a total of 117 team champions in 116 classes or divisions (there was one tie in boys soccer), in a year where the number of postseason tournaments offered by the Association grew with the addition of bowling for girls and boys. There were five schools winning their first MHSAA titles in any sport: Goodrich in girls cross country (which also won a girls track and field title in the spring), Hudsonville in boys bowling; Lansing Christian in girls basketball, Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest in baseball; and White Pigeon in boys golf. In addition, there were 37 other teams which won tournament titles in a given sport for the first time.

Twenty-one of the 82 schools winning in 2003-04 took more than one crown, with four schools New Lothrop, Marquette, Jackson Lumen Christi and Detroit Country Day claiming two championships each in unified tournaments. New Lothrop won in girls volleyball and team dual wrestling; Marquette had titles in ice hockey and girls skiing; Jackson Lumen Christi was a co-champion in boys soccer and football Finals winner; and Detroit Country Day won in girls basketball and girls soccer. Marquette won eight total titles; while Country Day won four championships. Sixteen of the MHSAA's 26 championship tournaments are unified, involving teams from the Upper and Lower Peninsulas , while separate competition to determine titlists in both Peninsulas is conducted in the other 10 sports.

Five schools ran their consecutive championship streak to four or more in a given sport including: Marysville in volleyball (8); Iron Mountain in boys tennis (8); and Marquette in girls skiing (6), girls cross country (4), boys cross country (4) and boys tennis (4).
