New Coaches In-Service Scheduled For Oct. 25 In Frankenmuth

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Oct. 1 – The featured speakers for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s New Coaches In-Service, Oct. 25 in Frankenmuth, will include presentations on the philosophical and legal aspects of high school sports.

The third annual one-day seminar will take place at Frankenmuth High School, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The workshop has been moved into the body of the school year from the summer in an attempt to increase attendance. The cost of the program is $20, and includes lunch and materials.

John E. “Jack” Roberts, executive director of the MHSAA, will be the lead-off speaker, reviewing Association regulations and providing his insights about amateur sports. Marshall Thomas, boys basketball coach at Saginaw High School, will talk about coaching and teaching and defining the role of the coach in educational athletics. Marty Ewing of the Youth Sports Institute at Michigan State University, a noted sports psychologist, will discuss effective communication between parents and athletes.

Ray Allen of Central Michigan University, a former high school and college coach, will discuss effective planning and teaching; and attorney Al Bush, Jr., of Traverse City will conclude the program with a presentation on risk management for coaches.

The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by over 1,300 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition. No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools. Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.
