Michigan Continues Ice
Hockey, Softball, Volleyball, Wrestling Dominance In Career/Season
Categories In 2002 National High School Sports Record Book
EAST LANSING, Mich. - May 16 - Michigan schools improved
their status in the 2002 edition of the National High School
Sports Record Book, published by the National Federation of State
High School Associations.
There were four new national records turned in by Michigan student-athletes
during the 2000-01 school year: Stevan Louch of Clare High School
hit home runs in six consecutive at-bats; LaTonya Coates of Bangor
set a career softball pitching record with 1,999 strikeouts;
and Nick Simmons of Williamston set wrestling records for consecutive
victories with 211, and career pins with 178.
In this year's book, there are 70 individuals from Michigan who
own national records outright or share them. There are 18 team
records which Michigan schools own outright or share. In addition,
Michigan owns 72 second place performances in the record book.
In the sports of ice hockey, softball, girls volleyball and
wrestling, Michigan individuals dominate the career and single-season
statistical categories.
Records in all four of the individual categories in ice hockey
are owned by Michigan players. In season assists, the entire
top 10 list consists of Michigan players; and in season goals
scored, 7 of the 10 players listed are from Michigan.
There are more individuals from Michigan listed in the softball
records than from any other state -- 135. Seventeen individual
records and five team records belong to Michigan. Michigan is
also the dominant state in 12 individual and 2 team categories
in the book. Diane Laffey, the softball coach at Harper Woods
Regina High School, continues to be the nation's winningest coach.
Michigan also sports the nation's winningest girls volleyball
coach in Jack Magelssen of Portage Northern, who is one of six
state coaches on the victories list. Of the top 20 winningest
coaches, Michigan has 5.
In the career and season individual statistical categories for
volleyball, Michigan has 34 listings, more than any other state.
Michigan is also the dominant state in four categories -- career
and season kills and career and season assists. In three of
those categories, Michigan players make up 7 of the top 10 listings.
Michigan also dominates the career and season stats in the wrestling
portion of the record book. In career victories, Michigan has
all 10 of the listings; in single-season victories and career
pins, Michigan has 9 of 11 slots; and in season pins, 8 of 10
spots.
"Our presence in the National High School Sports Record
Book is a reflection of the continued growth in submissions
of information for the Michigan Record Book," said MHSAA
Communications Director John Johnson, who once served as chair
of the NFHS's National High School Records Committee. "We
know that these lists are a continual work in progress, and encourage
people to visit the records pages on the MHSAA Web Site, and
then contact us if they have information that could help us fill
out these lists."
The majority of all listings in the National High School Sports
Record Book from Michigan are in girls sports. There are 427
individual listings from Michigan in this year's record book,
226 of them from girls. Of the 142 team listings in the book,
they are equally split between girls sports and boys sports.
The 2002 edition of the National High School Sports Record Book
is available for purchase from the National Federation of State
High School Associations at a cost of $12.95 each, plus postage
and handling. For more information, contact the NFHS at P.O.
Box 690, Indianapolis, IN 46206. Telephone: 317.972.6900.
The 2002 record book will soon be available for viewing on the
Internet at the NFHS's internet partner -- ihigh.com. Michigan
high school records can be viewed by clicking on Record Book
on the MHSAA Web Site -- mhsaa.com. The Michigan records list
is updated periodically during the school year by MHSAA Historian
Ron Pesch of Muskegon.
The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary
membership by over 1,300 public and private senior high schools
and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common
rules for athletic eligibility and competition. No government
funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such
association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament
entry fees from schools. Member schools which enforce these
rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which
attract approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.
