Michigan Dominates Ice Hockey, Softball, Volleyball,
Wrestling Career/Season Categories In 2001 National High School
Sports Record Book
EAST LANSING, Mich. - May 11 - Michigan schools are well represented from the
front cover to the final pages of the 2001 edition of the National
High School Sports Record Book, published by the National Federation
of State High School Associations.
The cover of this year's book features one
of two Michigan student-athletes to set national records during
the 1999-2000 school year, Dathen Reitzenhein of Rockford High
School, who set a new record in the 3,200-meter run with an 8:41.1
clocking. The other Michigan at the top of the lists is Phil
Milerov of Caro, who finished his wrestling career with 160 pins.
Reitzenhein and Milerov own 2 of 44 individual
records set by athletes and coaches from Michigan in this year's
book. There are also 15 records set by Michigan teams in the
book.
In 4 sports -- ice hockey, softball, girls
volleyball and wrestling -- Michigan individuals dominate the
career and single-season statistical categories.
Records in 3 of the 4 individual categories
in ice hockey are owned by Michigan players. In season assists,
the entire top 10 list consists of Michigan players; and in season
goals scored, 8 of the 10 players listed are from Michigan.
There are more individuals from Michigan listed
in the softball records than from any other state -- 119. Sixteen
individual records and 4 team records belong to Michigan. Michigan
is also the dominant state in 15 individual and 3 team categories
in the book. Diane Laffey, the softball coach at Harper Woods
Regina High School, is the nation's winningest coach.
Michigan also sports the nation's winningest
girls volleyball coach in Jack Magelssen of Portage Northern,
who is 1 of 6 state coaches on the victories list, and Michigan
has more coaches among those 32 mentors on that list than any
other state.
In the career and season individual statistical
categories for volleyball, Michigan has 37 listings, more than
any other state; and 3 record holders in those categories, which
also tops the nation. Michigan is also the dominant state, in
4 categories -- career and season kills and career and season
assists -- with 6 of the top 10 listings featuring Michigan players.
Michigan also dominates the career and season
stats in the wrestling portion of the record book. In single-season
victories, Michigan has 13 of the 17 listings, in career victories,
Michigan has 8 of 10 slots; and in season and career pins, 7
of 10 lists.
For all of the lists that Michigan student-athletes,
coaches and teams appear on, the number could be higher.
"Our presence in the National High School Sports Record
Book is great," said MHSAA Communications Director John
Johnson, who also serves as chair of the NFHS's National High
School Records Committee, "but there are lot performances
out there that could be submitted for the Michigan and National
High School Sports Record Books. We encourage people to visit
these records pages on the Internet, and then contact us if they
have information that could help us fill out these lists."
The majority of all listings in the National
High School Sports Record Book from Michigan are in girls sports.
There are 350 individual listings from Michigan in this year's
record book, 187 of them from girls. Of the 111 team listings
in the book, 56 are in girls sports.
The 2001 edition of the National High School
Sports Record Book is available for purchase from the National
Federation of State High School Associations at a cost of $9.95
each, plus postage and handling. For more information, contact
the NFHS at P.O. Box 690, Indianapolis, IN 46206. Telephone:

The 2001 record book will soon be available
for viewing on the Internet at the NFHS's internet partner --
ihigh.com. The 2000 book was currently available for viewing
at the time of this release. Michigan high school records can
be viewed by clicking on Records on the MHSAA Web Site -- mhsaa.com.
The Michigan records list is updated periodically during the
school year by MHSAA Historian Ron Pesch of Muskegon.
The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation
of voluntary membership by over 1,300 public and private senior
high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop
common rules for athletic eligibility and competition. No government
funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such
association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament
entry fees from schools. Member schools which enforce these rules
are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract
approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.
